Thales from Milete 624-546 BC
Thales was considered as one of the seven wizards of the ancient world. As first Greek astronomer predicted he the darkening of the sun at 28 May 585 before Christ. (*Note!)
Plato from Athene 427-347 BC
Philosopher and learning master of Aristoteles. The true reality is the world of the eternal ideas.
Aristoteles from Stagira 384-322 BC
The 52 books of Aristoteles were to the end of the dark middle ages for the scientists of just as large importance as the bible for the theologians. The Earth was considered as the center of the universe.
Aristarchus from Samos 250 BC
Philosopher and tutor of Archimedes. Aristarchus already stated that the sun was the center of the solar system, where the planet Earth was moving around in a circle.
Archimedes from Syracuse 287-212 BC
Archimedes described the discovery of Aristarchus (*Note!) and can be considered as a prerunner for the later laws of Newton. Archimedes calculated a dimension for the whole universe in surprising agreement with current modern estimates.
Claudius Ptolemeus made the wrong geocentric world view of Aristoteles complete, where the Earth was considered as a center of the universe. In its famous book the Almagest he describes the world system in the form of five theorems. (*Note!)
Nicolaus Copernicus 1473-1543 AC
He stated that the sun was the center, where the planets were moving around in circles, this is the heliocentric world view.
Galileo Galilei 1564-1642 AC
Galilei provided several proofs to for the heliocentric world view. Galilei discovered among others the moons of Jupiter and demonstrated that these definitively do not circle around the Earth.
Kepler founded the three laws of movement for the planets, called to him as the laws of Kepler, whereby the planets move in elliptic orbits around the sun. (*Note!)
Newton formulated as the first scientist the general laws for forces, among which the universal law for gravitation and is the founder of current newtonian physics and differential calculus. (*Note!)
Einstein stated the special and general theory of relativity. In his special theory the equivalence of matter and energy follows from the formula E=mc. In his general theory the gravitation follows as a property of the space-time from the general field equations. (*Note!)
Edwin Hubble 1889-1953 AC
Astronomer and discoverer of the expanding universe. All galaxies are moving from each other, whereby the flight velocity increases proportionally with the distance to the observer. This applies to each observer, independent of his position in the universe (universal expansion).
George Gamov 1904
Nuclear expert and champion of the big bang theory, whereby the universe originate from a particular situation in space and time ('big bang'). At the beginning stage of the universe the light elements arise. The heavier elements arise later in the stars by means of nuclear fusion.
Fred Hoyle 1915
Cosmologist and champion of the theory of the continuous creation of matter out off nothing. He brought his theory in conformity with the general theory of relativity of Einstein.
Many modern cosmologists (also professor Dr. Stephen Hawking) are followers of the 'NIBBRMEU'. This means 'New Inflationary Big Bang Relativistic Model of the Expanding Universe'. This is a model for an universe, that expands, obeys the laws of general relativity and came to existence as a big bang, that started with an inflation of huge magnitude. This inflation was caused by a particular temporary situation with repellent in place of attracting gravity. If we read 'NIBBRMEU' the other way round, these cosmologists accord less and less with each other, concerning the meaning of the characters.
