Landbirds and seabirds.
When the wind is wrong, sometimes landbirds, such as starlings and sparrows, come carried by the wind to a northsea cutter. Generally they are then wet to the skin, weary and exhausted, shivering of the cold by the wet water in their feathers. On the cutter they live generally no longer then a day, because they have drunk salt water.
Sea birds on the other hand have absolutely no problem with drinking salt water and their feather package is well resistant against marine water. In their head they have an extra organ to remove the salt from of the marine water and sometimes we see a white salt drop on their beak They can excellently fly above the sea, swim on the sea and dive into the sea to catch fish.
We generally see a cutter on the sea accompanied by dozens of sea birds, especially gulls of various kinds. These birds hardly fly, but float on the windward side of the ship, thereby tacking on the wind, such as we also see by sailing ships.
Gannets for example let themselves fall from an altitude of 50 meters into the sea with the head perpendicular down and applaud thereby sometimes also still with their wings to fall still harder on the water and to dive very deeply for fish. Sometimes they dive into the nets, if they see these disappear in the sea for a new fishing time. If the captain then not use swiftly the sound of the ship's horn, they drown pitifully trapped in the nets
