Longrange trawler 1967

Design longrange trawler: Pieter Beeldsnijder, The Netherlands.

Beam trawling on the North Sea.

Beam trawling is the fishing method which is practiced in the Netherlands by the major part of the fleet: 150 large beam trailers, wide 70 Euro-cutters and wide 100 shrimp cutters, medio 2005. These numbers alas are going down nowadays, because the expensive oil and strong fish catch quota.

With the beamtrawls they are fishing several sorts of flatfishes, especially plaice, sole, dab, turbot and brill. Moreover this method produces a large catch of other fishes as cod fish, ray, whiting, red gurnard, mullet, anglerfish (devil fish), lemon sole and whelk.

The narrow oblong mouth of a beam trawl is made up of a rigid beam along the top, and two skids to either side. To catch flat fish heavy 'tickler chains' are suspended along the bottom of the mouth. That is to awaken the flatfishes for swimming into the nets.

At dragging the nets over the bottom, this bottom is routed or ploughed, as a result of which food is released for other fishes and minerals for bottom plants. For this reason a fisherman returns more often to an earlier fished area. The denomination robbery fishing for this form of fishing testifies thus of a certain degree of ignorance concerning the real state of the art.

I thank Greenpeace for their recent stupid and criminal dumping of heavy rocks in the European waters, by stopping immediately my further donations and subscription. A trawler can capsize in a few seconds, when the trail nets are being restrained by these stones. Also the steel wire ropes can possible break and decapitate a fisherman, touched by a loose whippy steel rope. Is that the way of nature protection for flatfishes and to treat fishermen as a dangerous species?
